Macau ferry operator TurboJet plans to work with six casino operators in Macau to provide a boat plus show ticket package to boost the number of additional visitors via Hong Kong routes.
The director of TurboJet, Wong Man-chung, made the comments to the Macau Daily News, a Chinese-language newspaper. References to the “plan” were reported in paraphrases by news outlets.
The Macau government has a policy aspiration to make Macau a “city of performing arts.” It encourages casino operators in Macau to invest in non-gaming activities, including concerts and shows.
TurboJET’s Mr Wong did not elaborate on how such a ferry plus show package actually works. Sands China Ltd., one of the city’s six casino operators with various facilities for concerts and exhibitions, already provides ferry services through Kotai Water Jet, operated by Kotai Ferry Ltd.
TurboJET is operated by Shuntak-China Travel Ship Management Ltd. The parent organization is Shuntak Holdings Ltd., founded by the late Stanley Ho Hong Sun, a Macau casino monopoly, and China Travel International Investment Hong Ltd., which is part of a Chinese tourism group.
Some ferry services from Guangdong Province in China are also offered in Macau.
For the Hong Kong-Macao route, TurboJet now runs more than 60 weekly voyages, with frequency every 30 minutes, Wong told Macau Daily News. That equates to about 50% of the single-day voyages before COVID-19, he said.
Wong pointed out that 24 hours of service is currently impossible due to a lack of staff due to retirement of elderly crew members.
In comments to the newspaper, he noted that competition for bus services through the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao bridge, a pre-pandemic factor, continues.
Macau received nearly 1.12 million visitors via ferry in the first quarter of this year, according to data from the Macau Bureau of Statistics: 42.7 percent of them are from mainland China, and another 38.4 percent are from Hong Kong.
First quarter sea arrivals represented 62% of nearly 1.79 million people in the first quarter of 2019.
