Citigroup’s survey of the Macau casino premium mass table, conducted on Friday (May 3), the third of May 5 in mainland China, showed a 144% increase in total wages and a 119% increase in athletes.
The total wage is HK$17.7 million (US$2.3 million) out of 775 athletes.
Citigroup used the bank’s premium mass player survey on April 28, 2023, the day before the 2023 holiday season, as a comparison point, and Labor Day itself falls on May 1 every year.
Analysts George Choi and Ryan Cheng said in a May 2024 survey that they had “announced the first non-dominant ‘Player of the Month’.” The banking group uses the term to describe the highest betting punter identified in the poll.
Citigroup said the South Korean sponsor was one of three people in the “Horizon” brand room of Galaxy Macau, the head of Kotai of Galaxy Entertainment Group, who bet in multiples of HK$250,000 ($32,000) to $399,000 ($380 million).
“I saw a total of nine ‘whales’ at the Galaxy Macau venue,” analysts added, “the most of any single premium mass room.” A ‘whale’ was defined as players betting HK$100,000 or more on one hand.
A total of 37 whales were observed in the Macau market as a whole, present in all six operators.
The tally was just four fewer than the 41 the agency observed during its maximum business period during the Chinese New Year holiday in February. The 37 whale numbers in May beat the 14 seen in the April 2023 survey.
“The two operators with the most hotel rooms – Galaxy and Sands China [Ltd] – appear to be benefiting the most from holiday crowds,” the Citigroup analyst said.
They added: “The two operators recently introduced a new side bet called ‘Small 6/Big 6’ on all bakarat tables.
“This new side bet appears to have gained popularity among players, and we believe it will improve the retention rate of Galaxy and Sands China.”
