Malaysia Resort World Genting Launches VR Center

Resorts World Genting, Malaysia’s only legitimate casino resort, launched a virtual reality (VR) entertainment center in collaboration with Boyd LLC on Thursday.

Resort World Genting is operated by Genting Malaysia Bhd. In a press release, the company said, “The surreal experience features cutting-edge technology and world-class content” in its nearly 7,000-square-foot (650-square-meter) “new fully immersive experience center,” called The Void. “This center is the first and largest [virtual entertainment center] in Asia,” Genting Malaysia said.

Resorts World Gending’s VR Center features two titles developed by The Void LLC in collaboration with ILMxLAB, Lucasfilm’s immersive entertainment division. It is “Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire,” described as Boyd’s main titles, and “Ralph Breaks VR,” inspired by the animated film Ralph Breaks the Internet, created in collaboration with Walt Disney Animation.

“Genting strives to partner with global leaders in their fields, and when it comes to virtual reality, The Boyd represents the success of technology to expand the boundaries of Surreal. We are truly honored to be the first place in The Boyd’s expansion plans in Asia,” Edward Holloway, vice president of leisure and hospitality at Genting Malaysia, said in a prepared statement.

He added: “For Resort World Genting, this is a huge development in entertainment for us and we invested an initial 10 million yuan [US$2.4 million] to provide Asian visitors with an unparalleled level of immersion and interaction.”

Craig Watson, chairman and chief executive officer of The Void LLC, was also quoted in the report as saying that opening Asia’s first center at Resorts World Genting was a “good start to regional introduction.”

Void LLC builds and operates virtual entertainment centers primarily focused on exploring immersive virtual worlds and dimensions.

Genting Malaysia is currently embroiled in a legal dispute over what is scheduled to be a Fox-branded theme park at Resorts World Genting. In November, the casino operator sued Fox Entertainment Group LLC and some of its related companies, as well as The Walt Disney Co., the suitor of many of Fox’s entertainment assets. The lawsuit concerns a 2013 notice of contract termination for the use of Fox Brands at the theme park.
