Recently, land-based gaming options expanded in New York as Cayuga Nation opened a new gambling facility west of Cayuga Lake, close to Seneca Falls. It should be noted that the new gaming facility is owned and operated by Cayuga State under the leadership of Congressman Clint Haftown. The gas station was run by a rival faction of the Cayuga community until 2020, when it seized the building and demolished the location and several buildings in order for Haftown and the council to establish itself as a gaming site.
In addition to the new Lakeside Entertainment Real Estate near Seneca Falls, The Nation owns and operates another gaming facility on Route 90 in the town of Union Springs, Cayuga County. Through its compact with the state, the two Lakeside Entertainment properties have been branded “Class II” casinos that can only offer video games and bingo options.
In addition to running the game, Cayuga Nation is also actively involved in the legal marijuana sector. The Nation has an increasing wealth close to Seneca Falls and has a cannabis brand called Arrow Head Hemp. The tribe’s products can be found both at the gaming property in Union Spring and at the Cayuga Corner Store, which is close to the new casino.
In a press release last week, Mr. Haftown said gambling allows the state to provide important resources to communities and citizens of Cayuga countries. He also shared that the tribe is excited to add another gaming facility to its existing Union Springs property and is looking forward to welcoming customers to a new location.
Back in 2020, Nation saw a plan to expand its existing Lakeside Entertainment Casino, but that plan was rejected. In August 2020, the U.S. Department of the Interior announced that the Nation’s application for a tax-free trust had been denied. The Nation’s decision was affected by the demolition of several buildings in the area in February 2020.
Meanwhile, the New York State Legislature is working to expand its not-insufficient or commercial casino property. Earlier this year, the administration expedited the issuance of three commercial licenses in the Downstate area. Then, in October 2022, the board was elected to decide where and where to host up to three casinos.
According to the New York State Gaming Commission, it appointed New York Women’s Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Kenia Avro, former New York City Housing Commissioner Vicky Bean, and Stuart Rabinowitz to its board of directors.
