Water quality issues of the Seine River, where triathlon and marathon swimming events are held at the 2024 Paris Olympics, are emerging even after the opening. With athletes unable to train for two days, the organizing committee of the Paris Olympics is only optimistic.
The organizing committee announced on Tuesday (local time) that the water quality of the Seine River was not suitable for swimming. “We have decided to cancel the training,” the organizing committee said in an official announcement.
As planned, the athletes had to train at the Seine River from Friday. However, the quality of the Seine River deteriorated significantly due to heavy rain in the area on Wednesday and Thursday when the opening ceremony was held.
There were concerns that high levels of coliform bacillus and enterococcus in the Seine River could harm players’ health, and the Paris organizing committee cancelled the training session. Training scheduled on Friday was cancelled, and only players who have to adapt to the Seine River are suffering damage.
Men’s triathlon is scheduled to begin on the morning of March 30. However, the organizing committee does not seem to be worried.
“Based on the forecast for the next 36 hours, the water quality will return to normal before the triathlon begins at 8 a.m. on Tuesday,” the committee said. However, it is reportedly considering postponing the competition to August 2 if the situation does not improve due to a thorough inspection of the water quality.
The city invested more than 2 trillion won (approximately 2 billion U.S. dollars) to clean up the Seine ahead of the Olympics. Nine days before the opening, Paris Mayor Ahn Dal-go jumped into the Seine and said after swimming, “I have been working really hard to clean up the Seine. As a result, the water quality is very, very good.”
