Tokyo IR Opposes, Metropolitan Council Becomes Bigger

Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party and New Komeito, led by Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga, failed to win a majority of seats in the Tokyo Metropolitan Council (building photo) on Sunday. That means political parties opposed to Japan’s casino resort plan have expanded their influence in the regional body, a government official said.

The Liberal Democrats won 33 seats in the 127-seat parliament, while Komeito retained 23.

Media surveys have shown that only the Liberal Democratic Party and the Japan Restoration Party among Japan’s political groups are in favor of the Integrated Resorts (IR), as these complexes are known in Japan. Other parties in the Tokyo election have spoken out against the plan. The Japan Restoration Party won only one seat in its local council.

The Japanese government has not yet expressed its position on the possibility of IR, but many observers say the capital of Japan will be a prominent casino resort.

In December, Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike said the city would “continue to consider whether to apply” for a casino complex bid.

The number of seats in Tomin Firstno Kai, a regional party founded by Mr Koike, fell to 31 from 46 before Sunday’s election.

So far, Osaka, Yokohama, Nagasaki, and Wakayama have publicly expressed their desire to host casino resorts. Upon opening the market, up to three casino resorts in Japan will be permitted.
