‘Own goal-goal-goal-canceled goal’ doesn’t work for Tottenham as they fall to Arsenal 0-3

Tottenham Hotspur conceded three goals in the first half of their North London derby against Arsenal.

Tottenham Hotspur went into halftime trailing Arsenal 0-3 in the 35th round of the 2023-2024 English Premier League (PL) at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, England, on Monday (Aug. 28).

The hosts started with Son Heung-min, Timo Werner, Dejan Kouloussevski, James Maddison, Rodrigo Bentancur, Emilien Hojbjerg, Ben Davies, Christian Romero, Pedro Foro, and Guglielmo Vicario.

The Gunners countered with Leandro Trosar, Kai Havertz, Buckayo Sakho, Declan Rice, Thomas Partey, Martin Ødegaard, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Gabriel Magalhaes, William Saliba, Ben White, and David Luiz.

In the ninth minute, Arsenal earned a free kick in a good position. The Gunners won a free kick near the penalty area and Ödegaard stepped up to take it, but his shot failed to clear the defense.

In the 11th minute, Son Heung-min stole the ball from Trosar under pressure in the penalty area and laid the ball off to Maddison, who ran in from behind and unleashed a non-stop shot that hit the top of the crossbar.

In the 12th minute, Arsenal rattled the net first, but it was ruled out for offside. Foro whipped in a corner kick from the edge of the box, but the ball deflected off a defender and landed in front of Vanderben, who was coming out of the penalty area. In the 38th minute, Arsenal’s third goal made it 3-0. A corner kick from Rice was headed in by Haberz and found the back of the net.

In the 44th minute, Tottenham failed to capitalize on another scoring opportunity. Foro played a pinpoint long pass from behind the halfway line and Son Heung-min collected the ball in the penalty area, but his shot was high and only the keeper could beat.

Seven minutes of first-half stoppage time were added. Tottenham continued to attack and try to get a shot off, but they couldn’t break through the Arsenal defense. The first half ended with a 3-0 Arsenal lead.
