Man City-Munich want ‘Germany’s top talent’, who could stay at Leverkusen

Florian Wirz’s chances of staying at Leverkusen have increased.

“Leverkusen, the Bundesliga’s leading buyer, may have increased hopes that Florian Wirz will remain at the club next season,” Sky Sports Germany reported on Monday.

Wirz is arguably Germany’s best talent. His soft touch on the ball allows him to break away from opponents and his dribbling ability is rarely seen in players his age. He is also a consistent provider of quality passes for an attacking midfielder. Mario Goetze has been called the German Iniesta because of his similar playing style to Iniesta.

He made his Bundesliga debut at the age of 17 in the 2019/20 season and broke the record for the youngest goal in the Bundesliga when he scored against Bayern Munich in the 30th round. He came into his own in the 2021/22 season and literally set the league alight, scoring 10 goals and providing 14 assists in 31 games before suffering an injury.

He suffered an ACL tear midway through the 2021/22 season and missed the World Cup in Qatar, and didn’t return until the second half of the 22/23 season. After a year off, he showed no signs of slowing down and returned to his old form, scoring four goals and providing eight assists in 25 games to lead the team from the relegation zone to sixth place.

He has been linked with transfers throughout his career. Last season, Bayern Munich and Liverpool were in the running for him, but he expressed his desire to stay in the Bundesliga and signed a new contract with Leverkusen until 2027.

Despite City’s desire for Wirz, German outlet Kicker wrote on September 10, “As one of Germany’s top football talents, Wirz is often the subject of speculation. However, the striker is under contract until 2027 and a transfer is not on the table,” the outlet reported.

Leverkusen sporting director Jimon Rolfes added: “We are in a good position and he has a long-term contract with us. We are in a good position and he has a long-term contract with us. There is no reason to think about a transfer at the moment,” he said, dismissing the speculation.

Since re-signing, he has been in perfect form this season. He has eight goals and 17 assists in 31 games, including two goals and four assists in the Europa League, proving once again why he is a top talent.

The kicker who voted Birz as World Class added: “Birz has taken the next step in his career over the last six months, and the names of Luka Modric and Lionel Messi have been mentioned when describing his fantastic six months. Indeed, his game has the hallmarks of two world stars who have been playing at the highest level for many years.”

City and Bayern Munich were among the clubs that were keen on Wirz. City had been monitoring Wirz early on as a possible replacement for De Bruyne. Reports have continued to emerge, leaving Wirz’s future uncertain, but now his father has spoken out about the transfer.

Wirz’s father and agent Hans-Joachim Wirz said in an interview, “Wirz is contracted to Leverkusen until 2027. That’s roughly how much time he will spend at Leverkusen. We will have to wait for the next two years and see where it goes. There is no answer to what will happen then.”

“It will take some time for him to be able to achieve these results consistently. Only then can we talk about superlatives and higher qualifications.” Birz is also a great fit with coach Xabi Alonso. “He treats the whole team very well, he’s the right coach at the right time,” said Birz’s father.

Furthermore, according to Falk, our dedicated Munich reporter, Leverkusen have a very clear plan for Florian Wirz. They want to qualify for the Champions League and keep Xabi Alonso at the club until 2025, if he stays.
