According to the latest figures, the Macau gaming industry looks to make a full recovery in 2023. According to Inside Asian Gaming, the Macau operator generated a total gaming revenue of $15.57 billion ($1.93 billion) in May, marking the fifth consecutive month of sales growth this year following the regional reopening on Jan. 8, 2023.
The sources reported that the Game Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ) had 366% more revenue figures achieved by the Macau gambling industry in May 2023 than the $3.34 billion ($414 million) recorded in May 2022.
Sales growth trend:
However, the revenue levels reached in May were 5.7% higher than in April 2023, when the Macau operator generated $14.72 ($1.82 billion) in gross revenue to achieve a record GGR level since January 2020. The May numbers, therefore, represent a continuation of a month-over-month uptrend in revenue, marking the highest revenue reading for 2023 so far.
At the same time, the figure represents a 173% higher year-over-year value of Macao’s GGR of $64.93 billion ($8.05 billion) tallied for the first five months of 2023, according to Inside Asian Gaming.
The industry’s strong performance in May also marks an extension of the Macau casino industry’s best first quarter performance over the past three years, with sales levels in April and May indicating a stronger second quarter of 2023. The region, which has been heavily impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and related restrictions, reopened its gaming facilities on Jan. 8, 2023, with sales figures already nearly doubling in January 2023 to continue to grow to 366% year-over-year in May 2023.
