Casino revenues at Paradise Inc., the local operator of foreign-only gaming venues, fell 32.4 percent in July from a month earlier, data showed Wednesday on the Korea Exchange.
Such sales were about 63.51 billion won ($49.1 million) compared to 94 billion won in June. Compared to the same period last year, this is a 137.0% increase from 26.88 billion won in July 2022.
Table game sales fell 33.5 percent sequentially last month, just short of 59.66 billion won. That’s up 145.0 percent from the previous year.
Paradise Corp.’s machine game sales fell 9.7% month-on-month in July, but rose 56.9% from a year ago to 3.85 billion won.
The company’s table drop in July, the amount customers exchanged for chips at tables, was 529.86 billion won, down 0.6% sequentially but up 125.0% from a year ago.
Paradise Co.’s latest casino figures are based on the results of four venues operated by its casino business division: Walkerhill in Seoul, Jeju Grand on Jeju Island, Busan Casino in the southern port city of Busan, and Paradise City in Incheon, near the main international airport serving the Korean capital, Seoul.
The company’s monthly update does not provide a comment on the reasons for the earnings change.
Paradise’s total casino revenue in July 2023 was 414.37 billion won, up 224.3% year-over-year.
For the year ending July 31, table declines reached nearly 3.37 trillion won, up 245.5 percent from a year earlier.
Rival foreign-only casino operator Grand Korea Leisure (GKL) said in a filing to the Korea Exchange on Wednesday that casino sales rose 5.3% month-on-month to 31.13 billion won in July. The latest monthly tally rose 8.8% year-on-year.
During the month of July, table game sales rose 4.8% sequentially and 6.5% year-on-year to about 27.8 billion won. Machine game sales rose 10.3% month-on-month and 32.1% year-on-year to 3.33 billion won.
The company did not comment on the reason for the change.
In the first seven months of this year, Grand Korea Leisure’s casino sales totaled 239.16 billion won, up 93.9% year-on-year.
The company’s cumulative decline in the first seven months of 2023 amounted to nearly 1.84 trillion won, up 120.4% from a year earlier, according to data submitted by the company. The casino company’s decline came to 246.19 billion won in July, up 56.1% from a year earlier but down 2.4% from the previous month.
Grand Korea Leisure operates three foreigner-only, seven-luck branded casinos. Two are in the capital city of Seoul, including Gangnam, and one is in the southeastern port city of Busan.
